A criminal investigator involved in the murder case of Thanasis Nicolaou has reported receiving threats related to his role in the investigation. Savvas Matsas, a former senior state counsel, shared that he has filed police complaints after experiencing intimidation linked to the case.
Matsas, who co-authored a crucial investigation concluding that Nicolaou was strangled rather than a victim of suicide, reported the intimidation to Nicosia police authorities approximately ten days ago. His complaint outlined disturbing social media messages and silent phone calls from overseas, with one message allegedly originating from a relative of a person directly connected to the case. The message ominously suggested that Matsas should “rinse with mouthwash before mentioning my brother’s name”—a clear indication of the threats he has faced.
Thanasis nicolaou: Unraveling a Complex Case
Thanasis Nicolaou, a 26-year-old Australian-Cypriot, was found dead under Alassa Bridge near Limassol on September 29, 2005. Initially deemed a suicide, the circumstances surrounding his death raised significant doubts, particularly from his family, who protested the ruling. Over the years, the case has undergone three separate inquiries, culminating in a ruling by Judge Doria Varoshiotou in May 2024, which declared Nicolaou’s death a result of strangulation in a criminal act.
Allegations of Negligence and Cover-Up
Matsas, who dedicated 37 years to the Law Office, has been vocal about the failures of the initial investigation, describing it as “crossing the boundaries of gross negligence and bordering on a cover-up.” His statements to the media, which implicated four former police officers and forensic pathologist Panicos Stavrianos, led to his removal from the case. This action only intensified concerns about the integrity of the investigation.
Evidence presented during court proceedings revealed that Nicolaou suffered severe bullying during his military service. It was disclosed that he was coerced into making “confessions of love to a lamp” and had expressed fears for his safety to his commanding officers prior to his untimely death.
Family’s Pursuit of Justice
In June 2025, the Law Office’s decision not to pursue criminal charges prompted Nicolaou’s family to seek private prosecutions against individuals they believe are responsible for the investigation’s shortcomings and the alleged cover-up. Their determination to seek justice has led to the appointment of retired Greek police lieutenant Lambros Pappas and lawyer Thanasis Athanasiou in May 2024 to conduct an independent investigation into the killing and to identify those accountable for the 19-year long cover-up.
Ongoing Investigations into Threats
In light of Matsas’s recent complaints, Nicosia police have initiated their own investigations into the reported threats against him. This development underscores the ongoing complexities surrounding the Nicolaou case and the challenges faced by those seeking to uncover the truth.
