This innovative collaboration, marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), underscores MSC’s dedication to developing the maritime workforce. With a fleet of over 800 container vessels and management of more than 900 ships, MSC is not only a leader in container shipping but also a pivotal player in maritime education.
Maritime professionals: Empowering Cypriot Students through Scholarships
As part of this partnership, MSC will offer scholarships and financial assistance to students from Cyprus, encouraging them to delve into studies within the blue economy. This initiative is designed to bolster the human capital of Cyprus, infusing the maritime industry with well-trained professionals ready to face the challenges of the future.
The MoU was signed by Group Managing Director and CEO Prabha Jha of MSC Shipmanagement Limited, alongside Dr Angelos Menelaou, Head of the Department of Maritime Transport and Commerce at Frederick University. The signing ceremony, held at the university’s Limassol campus, was attended by academic staff and aspiring maritime students, all of whom expressed enthusiasm for the opportunities that lie ahead.
Internships and Scholarships for Maritime Studies
MSC Shipmanagement is set to provide not only short-term internships but also two full scholarships covering four years for incoming students enrolled in the BSc in Maritime Studies programme. An evaluation committee will carefully select eligible students, and the scholarships will be renewed every two years, ensuring continuous support for maritime education.
Additionally, MSC will fund students’ participation in an annual educational field trip to Europe, which includes visits to significant maritime institutions and landmarks. Destinations such as the International Maritime Organisation, the Greenwich Observatory, and the Baltic Exchange in London will enhance the students’ practical understanding of the maritime world.
Enhancing Resources and Educational Workshops
Beyond scholarships, MSC will also contribute to the university by funding subscriptions to valuable information resources that benefit both students and researchers in the maritime field. This commitment extends to educational workshops that Frederick University will conduct on marine and shipping topics, aimed at MSC Shipmanagement personnel and the broader maritime industry.
Through these workshops and collaborative research initiatives, the partnership aims to bridge the gap between academic theory and industry practice, fostering a rich environment for learning and innovation.
