The University of Nicosia (UNIC) is set to expand its educational reach with the establishment of UNIC Athens, a new campus in Greece. This initiative has been authorised by the Greek Ministry of Education, further cementing UNIC’s enduring academic partnership with Greece.
University of: Inaugural Class Planned for Fall 2025
UNIC Athens is scheduled to welcome its first cohort of students in Fall 2025. The new campus will be located in Ellinikon, Athens, within a purpose-designed facility aimed at fostering an innovative learning environment.
Academic Programmes on Offer
In preparation for the opening, UNIC has submitted nine undergraduate programmes for accreditation to the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education (HAHE). These programmes include:
- Medicine
- Law
- Pharmacy
- Computer Science
- Data Science
- Psychology
- Business Administration
- Accounting
- Marketing Management
Additionally, two postgraduate programmes, an MBA and a PhD in Medical Sciences, are planned for launch in 2026.
Innovative Campus Design
UNIC Athens will be uniquely situated within the €8 billion The Ellinikon smart city project. The campus will feature 75,000 square metres of buildable space dedicated to teaching, research, and student accommodation, incorporating advanced technologies such as AI and robotics.
For the Fall 2025 semester, the initial phase will consist of a 12,500 square metre campus that has been purpose-renovated. This facility will support various academic pursuits, including health and life sciences research as well as clinical skills development. Notably, it is expected to be the first LEED-certified university building in Greece, showcasing UNIC’s commitment to sustainability.
Partnerships for Clinical Education
The UNIC Medical School has established a significant collaboration with the Hellenic Healthcare Group (HHG), which will serve as its exclusive university hospital network in Greece. Key hospitals such as Hygeia and Metropolitan General will provide vital support for clinical teaching and research.
Focus on Research and Innovation
UNIC Athens will also play a crucial role in UNIC’s “Evolve” Research and Innovation initiative. This programme focuses on utilising Artificial Intelligence to enhance human health, particularly in the areas of healthspan and longevity. Further partnerships related to this pivotal research area are expected to be announced in Fall 2025.
Strengthening Academic Ties with Greece
The University of Nicosia is Cyprus’s largest research institution based on student enrolment, and it has drawn a significant number of Greek students over the past decade. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE WUR) for 2025, UNIC is ranked alongside Greece’s top public universities, illustrating its commitment to high-quality education.
Establishing UNIC Athens not only expands educational opportunities for students in Greece but also reinforces the historical ties between the two nations in the field of higher education.
Future Developments
The subsequent phases of the UNIC Athens campus are planned for completion in 2028 and 2031, ensuring a comprehensive educational environment that will evolve alongside technological advancements and academic needs.
