A e: A Major Upgrade for Public Health

Damianos highlighted that the new facility represents a significant enhancement for public health in Larnaca, featuring multiple new facilities designed to improve patient care. This upgrade comes as part of ongoing efforts to address healthcare demands in the region.

Fast-Track Clinics Enhance Efficiency

During a recent visit to the hospital’s fast-track clinic, Damianos addressed the role of A&E departments alongside the operation of these clinics in Larnaca, Famagusta, and other cities. He noted that previous concerns about long waiting times in A&E have been significantly alleviated by the introduction of fast-track clinics.

These clinics cater to low-risk cases, allowing them to be treated more efficiently in a dedicated space by specialised doctors. This not only enhances patient care but also reduces the pressure on emergency wards, which have historically struggled with high patient volumes.

Timeline of Fast-Track Clinics

Fast-track clinics began their operations on a pilot basis in Nicosia on March 31, followed by Paphos on June 2. The clinic in Larnaca commenced operations on July 18 and is currently open from Friday to Sunday, treating an average of 18 patients daily. Health ministry data indicates that as of August 26, the Larnaca clinic had seen a total of 329 patients.

Moreover, a seasonal fast-track clinic opened at Famagusta general hospital on August 18, where approximately half of the hospital’s patients have since been seen through the clinic. In its initial nine days, it treated 145 patients, averaging 16 visits per day. This clinic operates only during the summer months to accommodate the increased demand due to the tourist influx.

Further Developments at Larnaca General Hospital

In addition to the new A&E department, Damianos shared that other enhancements at Larnaca General Hospital are also underway. Upgrades to the mental health clinic, dental clinic, and mother and child areas are expected to be completed by the end of September, with a handover planned in approximately one month.

Addressing Staffing Challenges

When questioned about complaints regarding understaffing at Famagusta general hospital, the minister acknowledged the unique challenges faced by the facility. He stated, “The patient load here in the summer is very different to other hospitals, because of the surge in tourist numbers.”

To address these staffing issues, Damianos mentioned that the state health services organisation (OKYpY) is exploring ways to bolster staffing levels, ensuring that the system operates smoothly during the next tourist season.

Relocation of Services

Regarding the relocation of services from the old Larnaca hospital to the new building, Damianos remarked that the first phase on the second floor of the new hospital is nearing completion. “It should be completed within a month, after which OKYpY will begin moving in, followed shortly by the psychiatric services,” he noted.

Expectations for Improved Care

The opening of the new A&E department at Larnaca hospital is anticipated to significantly improve emergency care in the region. With the addition of fast-track clinics and ongoing upgrades to various hospital services, the local health infrastructure is poised to better meet the needs of the community.
