cyprus unemployment — cyprus unemployment — Unemployment in Cyprus has decreased to 4.3% in the second quarter of 2025, a notable improvement from 4.6% in the same period last year, according to a report from the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat) released on Thursday.
The total number of unemployed individuals is now 22,663, comprising 11,019 men and 11,644 women. This marks a decrease from the previous year, where 23,760 people were recorded as unemployed, with 10,980 men and 12,780 women.
Cyprus unemployment: Labour Force Growth
The labour force in Cyprus has expanded to 528,981, which represents 65.4% of the population, an increase from 511,423 (65.1%) in Q2 2024. Male participation has reached 71.1%, while female participation stands at 60.0%. This growth signals a positive trend in the job market as more individuals engage in employment.
Rising Employment Figures
The number of employed persons has risen to 506,318, contributing to an overall employment rate of 62.6%. The breakdown shows 269,796 men (68.3%) and 236,522 women (57.2%), compared to 487,663 employed individuals in Q2 2024, which had respective rates of 67% and 57.5%.
Employment Rates by Age
For those aged 20–64, the employment rate has improved to 81.7%, up from 80.1% in the same quarter last year. Within this age group, 87% of men and 76.5% of women are now employed. The rate for those aged 55–64 is 71.5%, slightly higher than the 71.1% recorded a year earlier.
Sectoral Employment Distribution
In terms of sector employment, the majority of workers are in services, accounting for 81.2%, followed by industry at 16.6% and agriculture at 2.2%. A year prior, these figures were 81.5%, 16.2%, and 2.3%, respectively. This consistency indicates a stable structure within the workforce.
Job Types and Arrangements
Most employed persons, 90.6%, or 458,893 people, hold full-time positions, while part-time workers make up 9.4%, totalling 47,425. This marks an increase from last year’s part-time figure of 8.9%. Among all workers, employees constitute 90%, totalling 455,728, with 85.7% in permanent roles and 14.3%, or 65,368, in temporary positions. Last year, temporary employees accounted for 14.4%.
Self-Employment Trends
The number of self-employed individuals is now 50,590, which remains consistent at 10% of total employment, compared to 48,808 (also 10%) a year earlier. This stability in self-employment reflects a balanced job market.
Youth Unemployment Rates
Despite the overall improvements, youth unemployment remains a concern, with 14.9% of 15–24-year-olds out of work (15.8% for men and 13.9% for women), an increase from 14.2% in Q2 2024. In contrast, unemployment among those aged 25–64 has decreased to 3.7%, down from 4.1% in the same quarter last year.
Unemployment Duration Insights
Regarding the duration of unemployment, 55.9% of unemployed persons have been seeking work for less than six months, while 23.0% have been unemployed for six to eleven months. Long-term unemployment has significantly decreased, now accounting for 21.1% of the total, compared to 34.5% a year ago.
