Greater Palm Springs is stepping up its game in inclusivity with the launch of the Autism Certification Grant, aimed at hospitality businesses eager to enhance their accessibility. This initiative, featuring a reimbursement of $2,500 for those achieving Certified Autism Center (CAC) status, is designed to make the region a welcoming haven for all, including travellers on the autism spectrum.
Autism certification: Empowering Local Businesses
The Greater Palm Springs Tourism Foundation has initiated this grant as part of its commitment to inclusivity. By assisting local hotels, attractions, and venues in obtaining or renewing their CAC status through the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), the foundation is paving the way for a more accommodating travel experience.
Building on a Strong Foundation
This grant complements the region’s existing designation as a Certified Autism Destination, with over 30 organisations already certified and more than 3,000 staff trained to cater to the needs of individuals with autism. Lauren Bruggemans, Director of Sustainability & Community Engagement at Visit Greater Palm Springs, emphasised the importance of creating safe environments for both visitors and residents. “We are proud to launch the Autism Certification Grant, which underscores our commitment to inclusivity and accessibility,” she stated.
A Growing Network of Certified Centres
As the momentum around autism certification continues to build, the grant opens doors for even more businesses to join the network of Certified Autism Centers. Community Engagement Manager Josh Heinz highlighted the initiative’s potential to strengthen the local community. “This grant will help even more businesses join the program and continue building a community that is welcoming and inclusive,” he remarked.
How to Achieve Certification
For hospitality businesses looking to achieve CAC designation, the process is straightforward. They must first meet with IBCCES and complete the payment. Next, staff training is required, which can be done through self-paced online modules—30 minutes for front-facing staff and 2.5 hours for managers. Certification is granted once 80% of the staff complete their training, after which they will receive promotional support from IBCCES and Visit Greater Palm Springs, along with eligibility for the $2,500 reimbursement.
