troodos churches — troodos churches — The opening hours of the ten painted churches in Troodos have been extended, according to an announcement from the culture deputy ministry on Wednesday.
These historic churches will now be accessible six days a week. From April 16 to September 15, they will welcome visitors from Tuesday to Saturday, operating between 10am and 1pm, then again from 2pm to 5.30pm. Sundays will see opening hours from 11am to 4.30pm.
During the winter months, specifically from September 16 to April 15, the churches will maintain a slightly reduced schedule, remaining open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4.30pm, and on Sundays from 11am to 4.30pm.
While the churches will generally be open on most public holidays, they will close for certain significant dates, including Christmas, Easter, Holy Week, and August 15.
The culture deputy ministry expressed gratitude to mountain commissioner Charalambos Christofinas and the various church authorities for their assistance in implementing these new hours.
These churches hold a notable place on the UNESCO World Heritage list, regarded as one of the largest collections of churches and monasteries from the former Byzantine Empire. UNESCO highlights their rich decorations, showcasing Byzantine and post-Byzantine art in Cyprus.
According to UNESCO, the architectural features of these churches reflect Cyprus’s unique geography, history, and climate. This includes steep-pitched wooden roofs with flat hooked tiles, which sometimes provide an additional roof over Byzantine masonry domes and vaulted forms, demonstrating the highest quality of Byzantine art.
UNESCO further notes that the architecture of these churches is distinctive to the Troodos region and likely of indigenous origin.
The ten churches that are part of this initiative include:
