This significant achievement was celebrated in Brussels on July 15, 2026, during a ceremony hosted by the European Commission, attended by dignitaries from various European institutions, universities, and graduates.

The Joint European Degree Label is a hallmark of quality for transnational programmes offered by European higher education institutions. To earn this label, educational programmes must adhere to stringent European criteria encompassing joint governance, academic integration, mobility, multilingualism, sustainability, digital learning, and the promotion of shared European values. This accolade signifies that students are not merely studying abroad but are engaged in a thoroughly integrated programme, collaboratively designed and delivered by multiple European universities.
According to Professor George Demosthenous, Rector of Frederick University, this recognition is not only a testament to the hard work and dedication of the EU-CONEXUS alliance but also highlights Frederick University’s active participation and substantial contributions within the partnership. “This historic distinction for our EU-CONEXUS Alliance fills us with pride and satisfaction,” he remarked. “The awarding of the Joint European Degree Label to only two alliances among the many operating across Europe is a remarkable achievement that confirms our leadership in delivering an exemplary European educational experience.”
Funding and Future Opportunities
Adding to the significance of this recognition, Frederick University has also secured new funding of €4.6 million through the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters 2026 call. This funding will facilitate the provision of full scholarships to students worldwide, thereby enhancing accessibility to high-quality education. Professor Demosthenous emphasised, “We are putting into practice the European Union’s ambitious vision for the future of higher education by combining excellence with accessibility.” The scholarships will support the continued delivery of the joint curriculum and foster collaboration with researchers, businesses, and organisations dedicated to marine biotechnology and the blue bioeconomy.
Addressing Coastal Challenges through Interdisciplinary Education
The EU-CONEXUS alliance focuses on Smart Urban Coastal Sustainability, tackling the multifaceted challenges coastal cities face. This initiative comprises several esteemed institutions, including La Rochelle Université (France), the Agricultural University of Athens (Greece), Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest (Romania), Klaipeda University (Lithuania), Universidad Católica de Valencia (Spain), University of Zadar (Croatia), South East Technological University (Ireland), and University of Rostock (Germany).
The Joint Master in Marine Biotechnology equips graduates for careers at the intersection of marine science, biotechnology, innovation, and the sustainable use of biological resources. Students have the opportunity to study across various European universities, selecting from specialisation tracks such as Innovative Bioproducts for Future, Blue Biomass, Marine Biorefinery, and Aquaculture Biotechnology.

The curriculum is designed to cover a wide range of applications in fields such as health, cosmetics, agri-food, aquaculture, and the sustainable utilisation of marine bioresources. Since its inception in 2021, the programme has successfully graduated three cohorts, with the first group completing their studies in 2026 eligible to receive certificates featuring the Joint European Degree Label. This recognition marks a significant milestone in their academic journey and underscores the quality and international focus of their education.
