Robotheadz: Success at the National Level

The ten-member student team secured first place in the national competition, which this year centred on the theme of archaeology. The students showcased their innovative mobile application designed to promote Cyprus’ rich cultural heritage through the use of robotics, programming, and creative design. Their achievement not only highlights their technical skills but also their commitment to preserving and promoting the island’s history.

Preparation for the International Stage

As the team gears up for their journey, they are scheduled to travel to Sydney from July 9 to 12. In preparation, the students met with Demetris Skourides, Cyprus’ Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation and Technology. During this meeting, Skourides praised their project and emphasised the importance of nurturing young talent within Cyprus’ research and innovation landscape.

Support from Officials

Recognising the significance of the competition, Skourides has taken steps to ensure the team has the necessary support during their stay in Sydney. He has reached out to Cyprus’ High Commissioner to Australia, Antonis Sammoutis, to facilitate connections with the Cypriot diaspora and to assist with arrangements during the competition.

Showcasing Cypriot Culture

To further promote Cyprus at the international event, the team plans to bring a variety of promotional materials. These include two 3D-printed artefacts created by the research team of Marinos Ioannides, as well as audiovisual presentations highlighting Cypriot culture, innovation, and local research projects. Among the projects featured will be the Cypriot nanosatellite currently under development, showcasing the country’s advancements in technology.

A Vision for the Future

Skourides expressed his belief in the potential of the younger generation, stating, “Cyprus has an excellent human resource and we must create the conditions for our children to dream, create and distinguish themselves internationally.” His comments reflect a broader vision for the future of Cyprus, where investment in education and innovation is seen as a pathway to growth and development.

Encouraging Scientific Thinking

Skourides further noted, “Investing in the new generation is an investment in the future of our country. As an institution, we support every effort that cultivates scientific thinking, innovation, and extroversion.” The sentiments expressed by Skourides reinforce the importance of initiatives like the FIRST LEGO League, which encourage students to engage in STEM fields and develop critical skills for the future.

Competing on an International Stage

Under the guidance of their coach, Pericles Cheng, the Robotheadz team will compete against various teams from across the Asia Pacific region. Their project not only encapsulates the essence of scientific inquiry and creativity but also serves as a representation of Cyprus’ cultural identity on a global platform.

Confidence in Young Ambassadors

Skourides expressed confidence in the team’s ability to act as strong ambassadors for Cyprus, asserting that their performance will reflect not only their technical capabilities but also their knowledge, ethos, and creativity. He believes that their participation in this prestigious competition will resonate beyond the event, inspiring other young Cypriots to pursue their interests in technology and innovation.

Looking Ahead

As Robotheadz prepares for their journey to Sydney, their story serves as a reminder of the potential that lies within the youth of Cyprus. With a focus on innovation and cultural heritage, the team is poised to make an impact at the FIRST LEGO League Asia Pacific Open Invitational, showcasing the talents of Cypriot students on an international stage.
