According to the Town Planning Department’s communication with Phileleftheros, the road’s completion is not feasible within the next five years. The Local Plan had initially aimed for completion by 2026 to meet traffic policy objectives, but the reality now suggests a far longer wait.
Residents have voiced their frustrations over the hazardous conditions on the street. Civil engineer Andreas Thrasyvoulou expressed his concerns in a recent letter to Larnaca Municipality, highlighting the absence of basic infrastructure and calling for immediate action. He noted that repeated complaints have been met with inaction, leading to fears that only a serious accident will prompt necessary measures.
Emergency measures are being planned by Larnaca Municipality to address the urgent situation. Municipal engineer Toula Angelidou acknowledged the daily traffic congestion and visibility issues, prompting the decision to implement immediate actions. These include clearer road markings and improved lighting. Tenders for these emergency measures are expected to be issued soon.
In addition, the municipality intends to request an evaluation from the Traffic Studies Authority regarding the installation of traffic lights near the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium. This area is experiencing rapid population growth, further necessitating traffic management enhancements.
On a longer-term basis, Larnaca Municipality has received approval to conduct a road survey, which will help inform a regulatory plan. This project aims to address various deficiencies along Andreas Mouzakis Street, including the addition of pavements, a cycling lane, bus stops, and a green corridor.
The Town Planning Department has also acknowledged the deficiencies of the road, pointing out that while it is classified as a primary importance road, it currently has serious shortcomings in infrastructure and connectivity. The total length of the planned improvements is approximately 2.3 kilometres.
In a recent meeting, Larnaca’s road needs were discussed, prioritising various projects based on the volume of requests. The top priority is the improvement of the Larnaca-Dekelia road, which has been delayed for over a year, raising concerns among local tourism bodies. Other projects, such as the redesign of key avenues and improvements to various roads in the Larnaca area, are also in the pipeline.
The Town Planning Department emphasised the challenges faced by all municipalities in Cyprus regarding road improvements, noting that the simultaneous advancement of multiple projects is hindered by limited financial and human resources. They continue to work alongside the Department of Public Works to prioritise pressing needs.
