Thanos Michaelides, head of the Cyprus Hotel Association’s Paphos branch, highlighted that hotels and other tourist accommodations typically enjoy occupancy rates exceeding 90% during the bustling summer months of June, July, and August.
This year, however, the occupancy level has dropped to only 70%. Michaelides noted, “Although there is an upward trend in bookings, mainly last-minute bookings, this does not cover the gap needed to reach normal levels for the season.”
The decline in occupancy has prompted the tourism sector to implement several strategies aimed at reviving interest in Paphos as a holiday destination. Among these measures is a concerted effort to attract domestic tourism, which can help offset the shortfall in international visitors.
Promotions and special offers are also being rolled out to entice potential guests. Hotel operators are keen to maintain high service standards, believing that these efforts will bolster the appeal of Cyprus hotels amidst the fluctuating market conditions.
Michaelides expressed optimism about the future, stating, “I believe these measures will continue to generate interest in Cyprus hotels.” As the summer progresses, the hope is that increased promotional activities, coupled with last-minute bookings, will bridge the gap and enhance occupancy rates in Paphos.
