A 22-year-old man was arrested on Friday as part of a drug investigation concerning the importation of dried poppy bulbs in the Famagusta district. This latest arrest comes amid an ongoing inquiry into a significant seizure of 6.05 kilogrammes of dried poppy bulbs found in postal packages.
According to a statement from the police, officers from the drug squad, known as Ykan, confiscated the dried poppy bulbs after discovering them in parcels. The operation highlights the authorities’ vigilance in tackling drug-related issues in the region.
Prior to this arrest, two other suspects, aged 35 and 30, were taken into custody on June 25 in connection with the same investigation. All three suspects have since appeared before the Famagusta district court, where the judge ordered their detention for seven days to allow police to conduct further investigations.
The Famagusta branch of Ykan is actively pursuing leads in this case, reflecting a commitment to combat drug trafficking and related offences. This incident is part of a broader trend, as Cyprus police have reported alarming increases in drug seizures this year.
Authorities have noted that the current climate of drug enforcement is particularly challenging. Record cocaine seizures and a rise in potent synthetic drugs have raised concerns among law enforcement. Police have reported seizing over 75kg of cocaine in 2023 alone, which is 130 per cent more than the total confiscated in all of 2022.
Moreover, the emergence of new synthetic drugs in large quantities has prompted law enforcement to adapt their strategies. Criminal networks appear to be evolving rapidly, introducing increasingly dangerous substances into the local market.
