The 82-year-old woman was located in a state of advanced decomposition on Monday, after neighbours reported a strong smell emanating from her residence near the American Academy in Larnaca city centre. Authorities are currently treating her death as unnatural, pending DNA testing for formal identification.
In light of this distressing case, the Observatory has raised alarm over the persistent issues of loneliness and social isolation faced by older citizens in Cyprus. In a heartfelt statement, they expressed deep sadness and concern over the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death, which starkly illustrates the inadequacies in the support systems available for the elderly.
The organisation highlighted that care for the elderly extends beyond merely meeting their basic needs. It must encompass regular human contact, monitoring of well-being, and ensuring dignity throughout life’s final stages. They called upon state services, local governments, and communities to immediately bolster early detection networks aimed at identifying and assisting isolated elderly individuals.
The Observatory advocates for a comprehensive mapping of the population aged 65 and over, along with the establishment of coordinated prevention measures. This would include regular social visits and meaningful psychosocial support to combat the isolation many older adults experience.
