A sea turtle was spotted off Konnos beach in Protaras, drawing attention during the peak of nesting season for two endangered species. A Philenews reader captured the moment while on a cruise in the area on Saturday.
Nesting Season for Endangered Species
This sighting occurs at a critical time, as the nesting season for the island’s two endangered sea turtle species—the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the loggerhead (Caretta caretta)—runs from mid-May to the end of September. The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research has reported a notable increase in nesting activities in recent years, particularly among loggerhead turtles.
Importance of the Mediterranean for Sea Turtles
In the Mediterranean region, green turtles breed almost exclusively in Cyprus and Turkey, while loggerheads also nest in Greece and in smaller numbers in other Mediterranean countries. This highlights the significance of the area for the survival of these species, especially given that many nesting sites are under protection.
Challenges Faced by Hatchlings
Each nest can contain between 80 to 100 eggs; however, the journey to adulthood is fraught with challenges. Only about one in every 1,000 hatchlings survives to maturity, underscoring the threats faced by these marine creatures. Factors such as predation, habitat loss, and climate change continue to impact their survival rates.
Protected Nesting Areas
The main nesting sites for these turtles are located at the protected beaches of Lara-Toxeftra in Paphos and the Polis-Gialia area, both part of the Natura 2000 network. These areas are crucial for the conservation efforts aimed at maintaining viable populations of these endangered sea turtles.
Community Awareness and Conservation Efforts
Local communities are increasingly encouraged to participate in conservation efforts. The Department of Fisheries promotes awareness campaigns to educate the public about the importance of protecting nesting sites and the need for responsible behaviour around these areas during the nesting season.
Future of Sea Turtles in Cyprus
As awareness grows and conservation measures are implemented, the future of sea turtles in Cyprus appears to be improving. Continued monitoring and support from both the government and the public will be vital in ensuring these magnificent creatures thrive for generations to come.
