The sharp contraction in the beer market was primarily driven by a notable decrease in export volumes, which plummeted by 31.3 per cent over the year. In May 2026, Cyprus exported just 262,090 litres of beer, a stark contrast to the 381,641 litres exported in the same month the previous year. This decline underscores the diminishing external demand for Cypriot beer.
Domestic Market Shows Stability
Despite the struggles in exports, the domestic market experienced a slight uptick, with beer deliveries rising by 0.3 per cent year-on-year. Local consumption increased to 4,127,559 litres in May 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, suggesting that local preferences may be providing some buffer against the decline in export sales.
Seasonal Trends Impact Deliveries
Interestingly, on a month-on-month basis, total beer deliveries saw a substantial rise of 28.9 per cent when compared to April 2026, reflecting seasonal demand patterns that typically favour increased consumption during this time of year. The increase amounted to 984,623 litres, highlighting the cyclical nature of the beer market.
While the domestic market’s performance has been a silver lining, the substantial drop in exports poses a challenge for the Cypriot brewing industry. The data from Cystat paints a complex picture where local consumption remains resilient, yet the need for revitalising export strategies is evident.
