The recent arson of a betting shop in Germasogeia has uncovered an alarming connection to a broader extortion ring operating in Limassol. A 44-year-old convict, currently incarcerated at Central Prison, has been linked to this investigation, which reveals a disturbing pattern of threats and financial extortion targeting local businessmen.
Betting shop: Arrest and Remand of Key Suspect
Following the arson incident, the Limassol District Court granted a five-day remand for the 44-year-old suspect, who was arrested just yesterday. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Limassol sought this remand to further probe the connections between the suspect and the series of attacks on business owners in the region.
Connections to Previous Incidents
The investigation has expanded since the earlier apprehension of two 20-year-old individuals, who have since confessed to their involvement in the betting shop arson. One of them revealed that the 44-year-old convict, despite being in prison, directed the operations, sending instructions and locations of potential targets. In return, the convict allegedly promised them €1,000 for successfully executing the attacks.
Threats and Financial Demands
The motive behind these criminal activities appears to be tied to financial disputes involving a number of local businessmen. Evidence presented in court suggests that the convict had previous dealings with the complainants, leading to demands totalling around €300,000. This includes a series of threatening communications sent via social media platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram.
A Pattern of Violence
Investigators have linked the betting shop arson to five additional serious incidents that have occurred in recent months. These include a Molotov cocktail attack on a car sales office in Agios Tychonas and the arson of luxury vehicles valued at over €160,000. The targeted individuals include a 40-year-old businessman and a 54-year-old company owner who have both reported receiving threats demanding large sums of money.
Critical Evidence Found
In a significant breakthrough, police conducted a search at Central Prison, uncovering a mobile phone in the possession of the 44-year-old suspect. This phone reportedly contained crucial evidence, including photographs of targeted premises and communications relating to the criminal activities. The authorities are currently analysing this evidence, along with telecommunications data, to build a stronger case.
Ongoing Investigation
The CID Limassol’s investigation is far from over. Authorities are expecting dozens of additional witness statements and are actively searching for CCTV footage that may have captured the movements of the arson suspects. A scene reconstruction involving one of the arrested suspects is also planned, which may provide further insight into the operations of the extortion ring.
