How CY-Alert Works
The CY-Alert system is designed to reach all compatible mobile devices within a specified geographic area, regardless of the mobile network provider or the SIM card’s origin. One of its key features is the ability to override a phone’s silent mode, ensuring that alerts are impossible to miss. Recipients do not require an internet connection or active mobile data to receive these vital notifications.

Each alert is accompanied by a distinctive warning sound and strong vibration, alongside clear instructions regarding the nature of the emergency. These notifications include essential guidance on protective actions or evacuation steps that residents should take to ensure their safety.
Technology Behind the Alerts
CY-Alert operates using Cell Broadcast technology, which allows alerts to be sent directly from mobile antennas to all devices within a designated area. This method is particularly beneficial as it is unaffected by network congestion, setting it apart from traditional SMS messaging systems.
Joining the European Network
With this launch, Cyprus becomes the 16th country in Europe to implement an emergency warning system under the EU-Alert standard, joining a growing network of nations committed to public safety. This move comes after a series of incidents in the region, including devastating wildfires and security concerns, highlighting the need for effective communication during emergencies.
Testing Phase and Future Plans
The rollout of the CY-Alert system includes a testing phase running from June 2 to June 15, during which notifications will be sent as ‘Test Test Test’ or ‘Exercise Exercise Exercise.’ These messages indicate that no real emergency is occurring, and no action is required from the public. The initial tests were conducted in the communities of Pissouri and Moniatis.
