  • Aradippou’s €8m Kyriakou Matsi avenue reconstruction is set to advance following ministerial approval, signalling a significant step for one of the region's busiest roads.

The project, which will serve both Larnaca and Aradippou, is poised to address long-standing traffic issues. Mayor Christodoulos Partou confirmed that the first phase is targeted for inclusion in the 2027 state budget. “We want phase one in the 2027 budget, and the Minister, whom we thank, said efforts will be made,” Partou said.

Kyriakou matsi: Funding and Phased Development

The ambitious reconstruction plan is divided into two phases, with a total estimated cost exceeding €8m. The state will cover 80% of the costs, while the municipality will contribute the remaining 20%. “The design was done on our own initiative because the Public Works Department could not do it due to time constraints,” Partou explained.

Details of the First Phase

The first phase, costing €4m, includes the widening of the road from two lanes to four, stretching from the Nea Salamina Stadium roundabout to the Australia Street roundabout. This initial work is expected to deliver immediate relief to traffic congestion, a pressing concern for residents and commuters alike.

Future Improvements with Phase Two

Phase two aims to extend the four-lane road as far as Aradippou Secondary School, followed by the reconstruction of the existing two-lane section beyond it. The goal for this stretch is to foster commercial development, as it features numerous shops and residences. Importantly, no expropriations are planned for this phase, ensuring that local businesses and homes will remain intact.

Addressing Traffic Challenges

Partou highlighted the road’s critical importance due to its role in facilitating traffic from Larnaca port, particularly for lorries making their way to the motorway. “For us, it is a road of primary importance,” he asserted, underscoring the necessity of the reconstruction to alleviate existing traffic problems.

Additional Infrastructure Projects

In a separate initiative, Aradippou Municipality is also seeking funding for a roundabout at the junction of Eleftherias and Ellados avenues in the same 2027 budget. This area has witnessed a concerning number of road accidents. Ongoing works include the installation of traffic lights at three junctions along Ellados avenue, with completion expected by the end of June. “These are works being carried out at the municipality’s expense. Unfortunately, the state handed us unfinished roads, and because the safety of our residents comes first, we will do them,” Partou noted.
