  • A third-country national suspected of leading an organised migrant smuggling network has been arrested on Thursday, following targeted operations against illegal immigration.

Officials have described the individual as the alleged “head of an organised ring” responsible for coordinating the unlawful facilitation of migrants into Cyprus. While the suspect’s identity remains undisclosed, the arrest is a significant development in the ongoing efforts to combat illegal immigration in the region.

This action is part of a broader enforcement campaign that has seen a series of arrests and removals in recent days. On April 29, authorities recorded nine arrests, along with five deportations and 11 voluntary departures. The following day, the enforcement efforts continued, resulting in 12 more deportations and 43 voluntary departures.

As part of the ongoing operations, additional removals are already underway, with plans for 13 deportations and 32 voluntary departures. The justice ministry has stated that these operations will maintain their focused approach, targeting both the return of migrants and the identification of individuals involved in organising or assisting illegal entry and residence in Cyprus.

While officials have not disclosed whether further arrests are anticipated, they have indicated that investigations into organised smuggling activities will continue. The recent arrest exemplifies the authorities’ commitment to disrupting networks that facilitate illegal immigration, ensuring that those involved are brought to justice.
