The Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (CING) has announced a significant investment in research with the launch of a new infrastructure dedicated to the study of cellular energy metabolism. This initiative marks a pivotal step for advancing scientific work in this crucial field.

New Infrastructure to Propel Research

Introduced by the Department of Biochemical Genetics, the facility is designed to enhance understanding of energy production and management mechanisms within cells. It aims to investigate their roles in both normal and pathological conditions, providing a comprehensive approach to cellular energy metabolism.

State-of-the-Art Analytical Platforms

The new infrastructure features three cutting-edge analytical platforms. The Seahorse XF Flex system allows researchers to evaluate key metabolic parameters simultaneously across multiple samples in real time. This capability is crucial for obtaining accurate and timely data in metabolic studies.

Complementing this system is the Oroboros NextGen-O2k system, which enables high-precision measurement of cellular respiration and other mitochondrial functions. Its flexibility in experimental design is expected to lead to innovative research outcomes.

Lastly, the Cytation 5 platform enhances the facility’s capabilities by incorporating advanced imaging technology. This combination of biochemical and imaging approaches supports detailed mapping of cellular phenotypes linked to energy metabolism disorders.

Boosting Biomedical Research Capabilities

CING has stated that this new infrastructure is set to significantly strengthen both basic and applied biomedical research capabilities. By supporting a wide range of scientific projects, it promotes interdisciplinary collaboration across various fields, fostering a rich environment for discovery.

Funding and Support

The project is being implemented under the Cyprus Recovery and Resilience Plan “Cyprus Tomorrow.” Funding is provided by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU programme, ensuring that the latest research advancements are accessible within the region.

Additionally, the initiative is supported through the “Research Infrastructures Open Access” programme of the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF), which further solidifies the foundation for future research in Cyprus.
