European protection: Widespread Support Across the EU
In a broader context, the Eurobarometer survey indicates that 66 per cent of EU respondents also desire increased action from the bloc to address security threats, economic shocks, and other international challenges. The call for unity is echoed by 89 per cent of Europeans, who believe that member states should band together to tackle global issues more effectively.
Concerns Over Security and Global Stability
Security concerns dominate public opinion across the EU. A significant 72 per cent of those surveyed express high levels of worry about conflicts and wars occurring near the EU, with 67 per cent concerned about terrorism. The rising threat of natural disasters linked to climate change and cyber-attacks from non-EU countries also feature prominently in the fears articulated by respondents.
Digital Challenges and Information Integrity
The digital landscape has not gone unnoticed, with 69 per cent of respondents voicing concerns over disinformation. Furthermore, 68 per cent fear the implications of misleading content generated by artificial intelligence and the potential threats to personal data protection online.
Priorities for the European Parliament
When it comes to the European Parliament’s focus, inflation and the rising cost of living top the list of priorities, followed by economic growth and job creation. Citizens express a strong desire for the Parliament to prioritise safeguarding peace, strengthening democracy, and protecting human rights both within the EU and on the global stage.
Overall, the sentiment across Cyprus and the wider EU highlights a growing demand for the EU to enhance its role in protecting citizens during crises, reflecting a collective desire for stronger action and unity in the face of emerging global challenges.
