In an official statement released on Friday, the board reassured the public that while some hotel booking cancellations have occurred in the Famagusta district, these are not anticipated to have a significant impact on the upcoming summer tourism season.
Etap expressed concern over what it described as an “unjustified dramatisation of the situation” regarding perceived risks to Cyprus. The board highlighted that the Republic of Cyprus is effectively implementing precautionary measures to enhance public safety, particularly in relation to potential threats.
“Under no circumstances should the impression be created that Cyprus is a target of major importance for Iran or its allies,” the statement read. This assertion aims to alleviate fears that the island is at risk amid the unfolding events in the Middle East.
In a plea for restraint, the tourism board urged both the public and media to maintain a level-headed approach to the situation, warning that spreading extreme scenarios could generate unnecessary panic and adversely affect the economy. “The reproduction of extreme scenarios and the cultivation of a climate of war cause unnecessary panic among citizens and harm the country’s economy, particularly ahead of the new tourist season,” Etap stated.
Although some cancellations have been noted, particularly for the next one to three weeks, the board emphasised that these appear limited in scale. “However, we do not estimate that they will substantially affect the summer tourist season,” Etap added, expressing hope for a swift return to stability in the region.
Etap concluded its statement by asserting the importance of calmness, responsibility, and unity during these turbulent times, urging those who shape public opinion to exercise caution in their remarks. “Calmness, responsibility and unity are the most important assets we have as a country,” the board stated, reflecting a desire for collective resilience in the face of uncertainty.
