Cyprus’s mass public notification system for crises is set for an important SMS alert test in the coming days, according to Civil Defence Commander Maria Papa. This initiative is part of a broader plan to ensure timely and accurate information dissemination during emergencies.
During a recent meeting with DIKO president Nikolas Papadopoulos, Papa expressed confidence in the nation’s readiness, stating, “We are at a very good level of readiness”. However, she acknowledged that there are still areas requiring improvement. “There are weaknesses,” she said, indicating a commitment to enhancing the system.
Papa explained that the upcoming SMS alert test is an “additional interim solution” developed by the Deputy Ministry of Innovation in collaboration with mobile service providers. The goal is to identify and rectify any issues within the notification system to ensure reliability.
In addressing the public, Papa emphasised the importance of staying informed. She mentioned, “Being informed increases your resilience and allows you to deal with danger more effectively.” This underscores the Civil Defence’s focus on preparation without inciting panic among citizens.
The feedback review process initiated by the Deputy Ministry aims to pinpoint problems that emerged during the initial test, with the intention of repeating the process in the coming days. “That is the intention,” she confirmed, reiterating the proactive approach being taken.
As Cyprus moves closer to the complete rollout of the mass public notification system, expected by early June, the emphasis remains on establishing a robust framework for crisis management. The message is clear: preparedness is vital, and the authorities are committed to ensuring that citizens receive timely updates in emergencies.
