Nicosia has been named the second-best travel destination in Europe for 2026, as per the annual ranking by European Best Destinations (EBD). This accolade places the Cypriot capital just behind Madrid, which took the top spot in a poll that attracted over 1.3 million votes from travellers worldwide.
Recognition for Cultural Richness
The announcement follows Nicosia’s recent recognition as the “Best Cultural Destination” in Europe, a title it earned last month. This designation highlights the city’s rich Mediterranean character and its historic Venetian walls, which reflect a unique blend of culture and history.
How the Rankings Were Determined
The EBD ranking evaluates nearly 500 locations based on criteria such as international arrivals, search demand, and social media activity. The comprehensive process involved monitoring growth rates and international media visibility to create a longlist of 42 high-momentum destinations.
To finalise the rankings, registered travellers were invited to vote for up to three destinations they would most like to visit in 2026, with the stipulation that they could not vote for locations within their own country. This year’s poll led to a diverse array of choices, showcasing the varied interests of travellers.
A Competitive Landscape
While Nicosia and Madrid topped the list, Italy showcased its popularity with seven entries in the top 20. Notable mentions include Verona in fourth place and the picturesque island of Burano in eighth. The Štajerska Region of Slovenia, home to the former “Best Wine Capital” Maribor, secured the third position.
