Oncology center: New Facilities on the Horizon
Plans for the expansion are ambitious, featuring three new operating theatres which will allow the centre to perform surgeries on-site for the first time. This development is expected to greatly increase the centre’s capacity to treat patients efficiently.
Investment in Technology
The introduction of a state-of-the-art PET/CT scanner represents a considerable investment in diagnostic technology. This €4.5 million piece of equipment is crucial for improving the accuracy of cancer diagnoses and treatment planning.
Branching Out to Larnaca
A new oncology unit is also slated to open in Larnaca by October 2026. This facility will serve patients from both Larnaca and Famagusta, alleviating some of the pressure currently faced by the Nicosia centre.
Funding Challenges Ahead
Despite these promising developments, the centre’s board chairman, Christos Triantafyllides, has highlighted a pressing need for additional state funding. Speaking before the House finance committee, he pointed out that the growing needs of the centre cannot be met without fair compensation under the Gesy health system and potential extra government support.
Legislative Changes in the Pipeline
To address these funding issues, consultations are currently underway for a legislative amendment that would allow for differentiated compensation for specialised medical centres. A bill related to this matter may be proposed after the summer recess.
Support from the Community
While the centre continues to receive vital backing from donors and the Bank of Cyprus, the emphasis remains on the necessity for sustainable support from the state to accommodate the increasing patient demands.
