Young Cypriots are using artificial intelligence tools at rates that surpass their European counterparts, according to data from Eurostat in 2025. The findings highlight a significant generational and geographic divide in AI adoption across the continent.
Ai tools: High Adoption Rates Among Young Cypriots
The data reveals that 76.5% of Cypriots aged 16-24 are actively using AI tools, which is notably higher than the EU average of 63.8%. Among EU countries, Greece stands out with the highest adoption rate at 83.5%, followed closely by Estonia at 82.8% and Czechia at 78.5%.
Comparative Adoption Rates Across Europe
In contrast, some countries exhibit significantly lower adoption rates among their youth. Romania records the lowest at 44.1%, followed by Italy at 47.2% and Poland at 49.3%. This disparity illustrates the varying levels of acceptance and utilisation of AI technology across Europe.
Reasons for Non-Usage Among Young Cypriots
Despite the high levels of adoption, there remains a portion of young Cypriots who do not utilise AI tools. Among non-users, 38% reported a lack of necessity as their primary reason, while 8% were unaware of the existence of such tools and 3% indicated they lacked knowledge on how to use them. Notably, concerns around privacy and security were minimal, accounting for just 1% of non-users.
Generational Differences in AI Engagement
The Eurostat data underscores a clear generational gap in AI adoption. While 76.5% of those aged 16-24 use AI, only 32.7% of the general population aged 16-74 have embraced these tools. This stark contrast suggests that younger generations are more inclined to integrate AI into their daily lives.
AI Usage for Educational and Personal Purposes
When analysing the purposes for which young people in the EU use AI, the report reveals that 39.3% engage with AI tools for educational reasons, compared to just 9.4% of the wider population. Furthermore, 44.2% of young users apply AI for personal purposes, including seeking information, entertainment, and organisation.
Changing Landscape of Education with AI
The report also highlights a significant shift in the educational landscape, where the use of AI has evolved from a supplementary resource to a primary tool for completing assignments, reports, and dissertations. This change indicates a growing reliance on AI among students, with many favouring it for its efficiency and ease of use.
AI Adoption Trends in Other European Countries
Beyond Cyprus, the adoption rates of AI tools among young people vary considerably across Europe. Spain reports a usage rate of 75.6%, while Portugal aligns with Cyprus at 76.5%. Other notable figures include Ireland at 66.5%, Germany at 52.7%, Slovenia at 67%, Finland at 67.1%, Lithuania at 73.7%, Latvia at 73.2%, and Bulgaria at 50%.
The Future of AI in Cyprus
The increasing adoption of AI among young Cypriots is reflective of broader trends in technology acceptance and integration. As the youth continue to embrace these tools, it is likely that educational institutions and industries will adapt to incorporate AI in innovative ways. The Cypriot government has also shown interest in advancing AI initiatives, as evidenced by recent announcements regarding a national AI factory and a ‘supercomputer’ project aimed at furthering technological development.
As the landscape of AI continues to evolve, the engagement of young Cypriots serves as a promising indicator of the future potential for AI technology in education and beyond. Their proactive approach to adopting AI tools may influence policy and development strategies in the coming years.
