Tree planting at the Kaloyeros river is an essential step towards enhancing urban greenery in Nicosia. On Saturday, Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou participated in the initiative, highlighting its importance for environmental protection.
During the event, Panayiotou stated, “Actions such as this send a substantial message for the protection of the environment.” She emphasised that urban greenery is not merely an aesthetic addition but a critical asset in the fight against climate change. Trees play a vital role in reducing extreme temperatures, improving air quality, and safeguarding public health.
As Cyprus grapples with intensifying heatwaves and increasing pressure on water resources due to climate change, the minister underscored the necessity of enhancing urban greenery. She referred to the Kaloyeros river as a “valuable natural axis within the urban fabric” and a “living ecological corridor” that contributes to biodiversity, enhances the microclimate, and provides a refreshing atmosphere for the city.
Panayiotou further explained that initiatives like tree planting and the creation of a linear path along the river strengthen the connection between the public and nature. “It reintegrates the natural space into the city’s everyday life,” she said, promoting a harmonious balance between urban development and environmental sustainability.
The connection between the Kaloyeros river and the nearby Athalassa national park adds another layer of ecological significance. This link creates a unified green corridor, enhancing the region’s biodiversity and providing essential habitats for various species.
