  • Paphos mayor Phedon Phedonos has firmly denied allegations of domestic violence against his wife, asserting that he is the victim of a concerted smear campaign by political opponents.

Phedonos described the situation as a “merciless war” targeting him, with his family caught in the crossfire. He claims that these accusations are part of a longstanding effort by adversaries to undermine his political career, stating, “stories that have circulated without result for a decade” have resurfaced.

In a public statement, Phedonos expressed his willingness to cooperate with an investigation into the claims, which reportedly originate from a woman currently residing in Russia. “I welcome an investigation to clear my name,” he said, adding that he will comment further once the inquiry concludes.

The mayor maintains that the allegations are entirely false, emphasising that he and his wife share a strong family bond, supported by their two children, who are aware of the unfolding situation. He said, “None of the allegations about me and my wife are true, and we have an excellent family.”

In his remarks, Phedonos highlighted the broader context of political corruption and organised crime in Cyprus, suggesting that these forces are colluding to eliminate him as a threat. He stated, “A domestic alliance of political and economic corruption and organised crime is fighting to neutralise its enemies under pressure from upcoming developments.”

He further elaborated on the challenges he faces, claiming that those wishing to see him removed have much at stake. “I know those who want to make me disappear are determined. Because they have a lot to lose if I don’t disappear. But I am also determined and I will be present until the end,” he declared.

Phedonos accused corruption networks and black political money of jeopardising the future of the country, asserting that the realities behind political narratives are both dangerous and unacceptable. He stated, “What happens behind the publicity curtain is unthinkable and dangerous for the people and their survival.”

The mayor’s comments reflect a deep-seated belief that his political presence is unsettling to certain established powers, prompting coordinated efforts to tarnish his image. “My political presence and named accusations have disturbed them, which is why they are working together on how to destroy me by misleading public opinion,” he noted.

Despite the heavy personal and familial toll of the situation, Phedonos remains resolute, vowing to continue his fight against corruption. “Citizens know who I am, what I say, and what I do. I trust them,” he concluded.
