apartment fire — An apartment fire on Saturday led to eight individuals being hospitalised with respiratory issues caused by smoke inhalation. The incident took place in a two-storey building, prompting a swift response from the Larnaca fire brigade.
Apartment fire: Swift Evacuation Amidst Chaos
As flames engulfed a room in the apartment, the occupants, including three family members and a young child, evacuated promptly upon noticing the fire. Fire brigade spokesman Andreas Kettis reported that fire stations in Larnaca dispatched two fire engines to the scene.
Extent of Damage and Fire Response
The fire caused significant damage to the affected apartment and also impacted upper-floor units due to smoke and hot gases travelling through the staircase. Firefighters ensured the safety of the residents by guiding all eight individuals down the staircase to a ground-floor open area.
Medical Assistance and Transport
Two ambulances were on hand to transport the group, which included two small children, to Larnaca general hospital for treatment of their smoke inhalation symptoms. Kettis confirmed the fire was primarily attributed to an electrical problem in a light fixture, with further assessments from electromechanical services awaited.
Police Involvement
Larnaca police were also present at the scene, assisting with the situation as it unfolded. The prompt actions of the fire brigade and the quick evacuation by the residents likely prevented more severe injuries.
