Police Spokesperson Byron Byronos announced on 12 January 2026, that a post-mortem examination conducted following the diplomat’s death on 8 January has shown no signs of criminal activity. The diplomat, identified as A.V. Panov, was discovered dead in his office at the Russian Federation’s embassy.
Initially, authorities were called to the scene under the premise of investigating an “unnatural death”. However, the embassy invoked diplomatic immunity, which limited access for Cypriot forensic teams. Instead of a standard scene investigation, Panov’s body was moved to the embassy courtyard and subsequently handed over to local authorities after several hours.
While the embassy had described the incident as a “deeply personal tragedy” linked to suicide, speculation arose due to the delayed investigation and the embassy’s refusal to share a purported suicide note. Byronos clarified that the Agios Dometios Police Station was in charge of the case, which has now concluded following the autopsy results.
The post-mortem examination revealed the cause of death, allowing police to confirm that no criminal behaviour was involved. Byronos stated, “The post-mortem was carried out, and criminal activity has been ruled out,” echoing the findings that will enable the embassy to proceed with repatriating Panov’s remains to Moscow.
In light of these developments, the Russian Embassy has expressed its commitment to supporting Panov’s family during this difficult time, as they prepare for the return of his body later this week.
