Speaking during a visit to the Ayios Athanasios Industrialists’ Association, he reinforced the ministry’s commitment to providing relevant funding.
Progress in Ypsonas Section
Vafeades noted that the Municipality of Kouri is advancing work on the Ypsonas section, which is part of the larger traffic improvement initiative. He confirmed that additional projects in surrounding areas are also moving forward.
Mapping and Tendering Timeline
The route of the northern bypass, which begins with the Evagoras Lanitis section, has already been mapped out. This crucial segment is expected to be tendered by the end of 2026, with subsequent areas following in the near future.
Funding Sources for Development
Vafeades reiterated that the necessary funding for these projects would come either from the ministry of energy, commerce and industry or the finance ministry, ensuring financial support for the ongoing developments.
Traffic Concerns Linked to Mall Development
During the meeting, members of the Ayios Athanasios Industrialists’ Association raised concerns about potential traffic disruptions stemming from the proposed development of a mall in the area. Vafeades assured them that conditions set by the public works department indicate that traffic congestion would remain at current levels, although he acknowledged that these conditions are not ideal.
Safety and Traffic Improvement Initiatives
Vassos Dimitriadis, President of the Limassol Industrialists’ Association, voiced his satisfaction with the collaboration between the government and the association. He highlighted the importance of implementing a second emergency entrance/exit to the industrial area, which he noted as a critical safety issue. Dimitriadis expressed hope that the public works department’s estimations regarding traffic improvements would be confirmed through these initiatives.
Historical Context of the Industrial Area
The Ayios Athanasios industrial area has been an essential industrial hub since its establishment in 1978, currently hosting around 140 businesses. Over the years, more than €4 million has been invested in its maintenance, including a budget of €315,000 allocated for asphalting various roads in 2025.
Continued Efforts for Development
Former Energy Minister George Papanastasiou had previously assured that the ministry is focused on addressing the challenges faced by the industrial area. Now replaced by former Health Minister Michael Damianos, the government remains committed to ensuring the steady development of this vital economic zone.
Looking Ahead: Future Developments
As plans unfold for the Ayios Athanasios industrial area, stakeholders are optimistic that the planned improvements will alleviate traffic issues while enhancing safety for all users.
