The chaotic series of events began around 1.30am when police, acting on received intelligence, identified a vehicle reported stolen. Officers set up a checkpoint in an attempt to stop the car for inspection.
Instead of complying, the driver accelerated, igniting a dangerous chase through the streets of Ayia Napa. Reports from the police communications branch indicate that during the pursuit, the stolen vehicle collided with two police patrol cars, prompting officers to fire warning shots in an effort to halt the escape.
The situation escalated as the driver veered onto the opposite lane of the Larnaca-Ayia Napa motorway, driving recklessly into oncoming traffic. The pursuit continued until the vehicle exited the motorway and collided with a third police vehicle.
In a final attempt to evade capture, the driver fled onto a dirt road in an area under the jurisdiction of the British Bases. He then abandoned the car and disappeared into the night, heading in an unknown direction.
While officers reported minor damage to three police vehicles involved in the incident, fortunately, no injuries were recorded. The Ayia Napa police station is currently leading the investigation, with assistance from the Famagusta criminal investigation department.
