Severe weather is currently impacting Cyprus, bringing intense rainfall that has led to significant challenges on the road network and damage to properties. Fire Service Spokesman Andreas Kettis reported that authorities received ten emergency calls primarily concerning flooded roads and premises across the island.
Severe weather: Traffic Chaos on Major Motorways
Particularly affected is the Nicosia – Limassol motorway, where heavy rainfall has resulted in extremely limited visibility, especially near Zygi, Kornos, and Governor’s Beach. The police are actively advising drivers to exercise caution, advising them to reduce their speed and maintain safe distances from other vehicles.
Emergency Measures in Polis Chrysochous
In response to the adverse weather, the Polis Chrysochous Fire Station has partially recalled personnel to deal with emergency situations. The local municipality has begun cleaning road surfaces and opening storm drain manholes to alleviate flooding issues. The road from Polis Chrysochous to Latsi has been closed due to significant water accumulation, posing a hazard to motorists.
Dangerous Conditions Persist
Authorities have heightened their warnings as the road from Polis Chrysochous to Argaka and Ayia Marina has become particularly treacherous. Drivers are urged to adhere to safety guidelines, including driving at reduced speeds and ensuring their running lights are on. The severe weather is affecting not just the Paphos road network but also the Nicosia – Limassol motorway, prompting ongoing alerts for those travelling in these areas.
