cyprus ukraine — cyprus ukraine — Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Thursday, reinforcing Cyprus’s commitment to support Ukraine ahead of its EU Council presidency in 2026.
The meeting, which took place during a working visit, began with a private discussion followed by expanded talks involving delegations from both nations. Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, who accompanied Christodoulides, described the visit as “deeply symbolic,” emphasising Cyprus’s solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
Letymbiotis stated, “This visit shows in practical terms our full solidarity and sends the message of steadfast commitment to the non-negotiable principles of sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of every state.” He further reflected on Cyprus’s own historical experiences, noting, “Our peoples know, unfortunately, the tragic consequences of invasion and occupation, the challenge to freedom and territorial integrity.”
Cyprus’s position on Ukraine is rooted in its own struggles, making its support authentic and politically consistent. The spokesman highlighted that Cyprus promotes European priorities including security, unity, and the strengthening of common political will.
In line with its future EU Council presidency, Letymbiotis reiterated Cyprus’s support for diplomatic efforts that could lead to a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. “Our alignment with international law and the UN Charter is unwavering, and we will always work closely with our European and international partners,” he stated.
The discussions between the two delegations are expected to focus on further strengthening bilateral ties while addressing international initiatives aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine. Letymbiotis noted that significant attention would also be given to the ongoing situation regarding the Cyprus problem, particularly efforts to restart negotiations based on UN Security Council resolutions and EU principles.
As Cyprus prepares for its EU Council presidency, EU–Ukraine relations will be a priority, with Ukraine’s path towards integration into the European family being a key agenda item. Letymbiotis confirmed that Cyprus is committed to supporting Ukraine’s progress consistently.
