Household spending in the EU saw a notable increase of 1.5% in 2024 compared to the previous year, as reported by Eurostat. This rise surpasses the growth of 0.4% recorded in 2023, indicating a rebound in consumer confidence and economic activity.
Key Categories of Household Spending
Among various spending categories, the information and communication sector experienced the most significant growth, rising by 5.7%. This surge suggests that consumers are increasingly investing in technology and digital services.
Recreation and Transport on the Rise
Following information and communication, both recreation, sport and culture, as well as transport, showed a robust increase of 3.0%. These sectors reflect a growing willingness among consumers to spend on leisure activities and travel.
Dining Out Remains Popular
Expenditure on restaurants and accommodation services also continued its upward trajectory, with a growth of 1.6%. However, this increase is at a slower pace than what was observed in the prior year, indicating a potential shift in consumer behaviour.
Decline in Alcohol and Apparel Spending
In contrast to the overall growth, spending on alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and narcotics saw a decline of 2.2%. Additionally, clothing and footwear experienced a decrease of 0.6%, maintaining a downward trend from previous years.
