An 85-year-old pensioner in Limassol is appealing to the City Municipality to continue funding the food costs for local pigeons, arguing that the animals are being denied their “municipal allowance.” Demetris Christodoulides contacted Phileleftheros to express his concerns after the Municipality cut the small fund he claims had been provided for the feeding of the pigeons near Akakias Street.
The Start of a Compassionate Initiative
The situation began three years ago when Christodoulides discovered eight dead pigeons outside a hotel. Alarmed by this sight, he claims a veterinarian informed him that the birds had died of starvation, which led him to take action. He started feeding the pigeons daily, initially motivated by compassion for the creatures.
Seeking Support from the Municipality
As time went on, Christodoulides faced financial difficulties. To assist with the costs of feeding the pigeons, he approached Limassol Municipality for help. According to him, he reached an informal agreement with the then-Mayor, Nicos Nicolaides, through which the Municipality occasionally covered part of the food expenses.
Christodoulides explained that a municipal employee recommended a specific shop for purchasing the food. However, after some time, he opted for a different shop where the prices were lower. He would then present the receipts to the Municipal cashier for reimbursement. Christodoulides claims that based on the instructions he received from the Municipality, he continued to buy food to support the local pigeon population.
Changes Amid New Leadership
When Yiannis Armeftis assumed the role of Mayor, the reimbursement for Christodoulides’ purchases ceased. He states that over the years, he has spent approximately €8,000 on pigeon food. This significant amount reflects his commitment, but it has also placed a strain on his finances, especially as he has a child in school.
Municipality’s Stance on Pigeon Feeding
Phileleftheros reached out to a municipal official for clarification on the funding situation. The official confirmed that the Municipality had made several payments—four or five, totalling around €100 each—after Christodoulides persistently requested assistance. However, they emphasised that there was never an official policy or decision supporting ongoing funding for the pigeon food.
Moreover, the Limassol Municipality has indicated that it does not intend to continue the practice of funding pigeon food. This decision stems from multiple complaints from residents regarding cleanliness and hygiene issues, particularly in the Ayia Zoni area, where the pigeon population has reportedly increased due to Christodoulides’ feeding efforts.
Commitment to Feeding the Pigeons
Despite the cessation of financial support from the Municipality, Christodoulides remains determined to continue feeding the pigeons. He has stated that he will carry on with his daily “food distribution,” even though he can no longer afford the expenses. His commitment to the birds remains steadfast, rooted in the compassion that began this initiative.
Community Perspectives on Pigeon Feeding
The situation has ignited a broader discussion within the Limassol community regarding the balance between animal welfare and public health. While some residents appreciate Christodoulides’ dedication to caring for the pigeons, others express concerns about the potential problems associated with feeding wild birds in urban areas.
Residents who have lodged complaints have highlighted issues such as increased mess and hygiene problems, which may arise from feeding large numbers of pigeons. The Municipality’s decision to cut funding reflects an effort to address these concerns while also managing the city’s resources effectively.
A Unique Community Challenge
Ultimately, the debate over the pigeon feeding budget illustrates a unique challenge facing local governments: how to support community initiatives that stem from compassion while also addressing the practical implications for public health and urban cleanliness.
As Limassol navigates this issue, the story of Demetris Christodoulides serves as a poignant reminder of the fine line between caring for animals and maintaining the welfare of the community. His dedication to the pigeons may inspire others to consider similar initiatives, but it also prompts reflection on the responsibilities that come with such actions.
