Nicosia municipal: Initial Discussions Highlight Potential Arrangements
Nicosia’s Mayor, Charalambos Prountzos, confirmed that NKUA is in negotiations to potentially occupy the Tarsi Arcade and the Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts (EKATE) building. Reports suggest that NKUA may not pay rent for up to three years. In this proposed scenario, NKUA would offer unspecified services to the Municipality in lieu of rent.
Concerns Over Non-Tendered Agreements
The proposal has sparked controversy, particularly regarding the lack of a competitive tender process. Critics argue that other universities or entities could provide similar services at a lower cost. Mayor Prountzos addressed concerns, stating that discussions are ongoing and that no final agreement has been reached.
Municipal Council’s Questions
Members of the Municipal Council have raised concerns about the procedures involved in granting these buildings to NKUA. Questions have been directed towards how the Municipality would respond if another university expresses interest in the same buildings. Some members have pointed out that NKUA’s private branch is seeking access, raising issues of potential unfair competition.
Interest from Other Universities
NTUA has also shown interest in the former Ayios Dhometios Town Hall, having conducted site visits. This has led to uncertainty among current employees about potential relocations. Mayor Prountzos confirmed that discussions regarding NTUA’s interest are still preliminary.
Meanwhile, the University of Nicosia is looking for municipal buildings on Lidinis Street to accommodate its School of Fine Arts. Mayor Prountzos mentioned that if the building requires repairs and the University takes on those responsibilities, the rent could be negotiable.
