Larnaca has unveiled a modern care home designed specifically for low-income pensioners, aiming to provide high-quality services at affordable rates. The Evanthia Pieridou Care Home, situated in the Sotiros area, marks a significant advancement in support for the elderly community in the region.

Care home: State-of-the-Art Facility Completed Ahead of Schedule

Constructed on the site of the previous care home, the new facility was completed three months ahead of its projected timeline. The project, which cost €3.5 million, was co-financed by the European Social Fund (ESF+) under the Cohesion Policy Programme THALIA 2021-2027. Built by A.K.I. Constructions Ltd, the design work was led by Andreas Nicolaou Architects + Designers LLC, who incorporated elements from successful care homes abroad.

Accommodations and Amenities for Residents

The care home is set to accommodate 48 low-income pensioners, with placements determined by income criteria and other social factors. The facility features a range of communal spaces, including a reception area, medical room, and dining area, all designed to foster community and support.

On the ground floor, residents will find an entertainment area, a hotel-standard kitchen, and personal care areas. The building also boasts hygiene facilities for both men and women, ensuring a comfortable environment for all residents. The first and second floors are dedicated to accommodation, featuring 22 double rooms and four single rooms.

In addition to the living quarters, the care home includes advanced technology systems aimed at improving the quality of life for its elderly residents. These include smart systems to aid those with hearing impairments, photovoltaic panels for energy efficiency, and underfloor heating and smart air conditioning to maintain a comfortable living environment.

Design Features and Outdoor Spaces

The architects have also incorporated an internal garden with a pond, providing a tranquil space where residents can relax, plant gardens, or create vegetable patches. This outdoor area is designed to enhance the residents’ connection with nature, promoting both mental well-being and social interaction.

Commitment to Community and Inclusivity

Larnaca’s Mayor, Andreas Vyras, expressed pride in the completion of the new municipal care home. In a video announcement shared on social media, he highlighted the facility’s commitment to respecting and addressing the needs of elderly residents. Vyras remarked that the home is fully accessible for individuals with disabilities, featuring ramps, lifts, and infrastructure that facilitate ease of movement throughout communal areas.

“With respect and care for the needs of the elderly, a space has been created that meets the most modern specifications,” Vyras stated. He emphasised the importance of accommodating residents based on social and humanitarian criteria, including age, financial situation, clinical condition, and the inability to live independently.

Looking Ahead: Opening Timeline and Staffing

The Evanthia Pieridou Care Home is set to officially open its doors in January 2026. Current staff and residents from the previous facility, who have been temporarily relocated, will transition into the new home. Mayor Vyras indicated that all available placements are expected to be filled by summer, and the facility will be fully operational soon after.

This initiative is a demonstration of Larnaca’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the welfare and quality of life for its elderly residents, ensuring that those in need receive the support and care they deserve.
