  • A 41-year-old man has been charged with drunk driving after a tragic collision that resulted in the death of a 51-year-old motorcyclist on the old Limassol–Nicosia road last night.

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. near the Moni overpass, where the suspect was driving a van without a licence or insurance. Police confirmed that he was also over the alcohol limit. The collision happened when the van entered the opposite lane and struck the motorcyclist head-on.

Despite wearing a protective helmet, the motorcyclist was seriously injured and sadly succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital approximately two hours after the crash. The van driver, on the other hand, sustained only minor injuries.

Traffic Police head, Marios Charalambous, reported that the suspect’s alcohol test indicated a reading of 48mg%, which is more than double the legal limit of 22mg%. A drug test administered subsequently returned a negative result.

Following the incident, the suspect was arrested under a judicial warrant and has been detained. He has not yet been interrogated, although this is expected to take place soon with the help of an interpreter.

The police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the driver’s movements leading up to the incident and the location where he consumed alcohol. They are also looking into the ownership of the van, which is registered to another individual.

As part of their investigation, an autopsy on the victim’s body is scheduled to be conducted today at noon by forensic pathologist Angeliki Pappetta at the Nicosia General Hospital. Additionally, a reconstruction of the accident will be carried out by a special unit of the Traffic Police Headquarters.
