murder plot — murder plot — A 51-year-old suspect’s efforts to distance himself from the murder of Stavros Dimosthenous have faltered, with investigators asserting that his claims are contradicted by compelling evidence. The suspect appeared before Limassol District Court on Tuesday, alongside a 44-year-old former footballer, for a custody extension hearing.
This latest court appearance marked the third remand period for the footballer and the second for the 51-year-old suspect, both of whom maintain their innocence. Prosecutor Panikos Avraamides requested the court to keep the footballer handcuffed, citing concerns over his potential escape. The court granted this request for security reasons, despite the suspect’s lawyer denying the claim, arguing his client had been isolated in a solitary cell for 16 days.
During the hearing, lead investigator Ilias Kreouzos outlined the ongoing investigation, revealing that the 51-year-old has made several claims regarding his involvement, yet police say these are contradicted by the evidence at hand. To date, investigators have taken 124 statements and collected numerous exhibits, which are currently undergoing forensic analysis. They are also reviewing extensive closed-circuit television footage and are awaiting around 69 additional statements from individuals connected to the suspects and the victim.
Kreouzos mentioned that searches are being conducted daily at various locations, including routes taken by the suspects before and after the crime. So far, there have been 22 searches, with two more planned to uncover critical evidence. Furthermore, police are scrutinising private communications between the suspects while awaiting telecommunications data that could broaden the investigation significantly.
A stolen Mitsubishi Colt has emerged as a crucial piece of evidence linking the 51-year-old suspect to the crime. The vehicle was stolen 12 days prior to the murder and was discovered three days before the incident near Sfalangiotissa cemetery, bearing false number plates and containing two jerry cans filled with flammable liquid.
CCTV analysis has shown that individuals linked to the case travelled by moped near Dimosthenous’s home on multiple occasions before the murder, subsequently getting into the Colt and a white van. These movements suggest that a murder plan was in motion days before the execution of the crime.
According to the police, the two jerry cans were intended to incinerate the vehicle, as ultimately happened with the stolen van post-crime. The connection between the 51-year-old and the theft of the Colt was established when information was received on 24 October, leading to his DNA being identified on the cap of one of the jerry cans. This discovery prompted a new arrest warrant for offences directly related to the murder.
