Petroleum sales in Cyprus experienced a notable increase of 11.2% in September 2025 compared to the same month in 2024, according to the state statistical service (Cystat). This rise brought total sales to an impressive 144,720 tonnes, driven by robust demand across multiple categories.
Petroleum sales: Significant Gains Across Categories
The most striking growth was observed in marine gasoil, whose sales skyrocketed by 112.3% year-on-year. This surge reflects a growing reliance on this fuel type, possibly linked to increased maritime activities. Additionally, aviation kerosene saw a significant uptick of 16.8%, highlighting a recovery in air travel.
Steady Increases in Road and Construction Fuels
In the road and construction sectors, asphalt sales rose by 29.7%, demonstrating heightened construction activity. Liquefied petroleum gas sales also climbed by 9.1%, while motor gasoline sales increased by 8.6%. Heating gasoil and road diesel saw year-on-year increases of 7.4% and 6.9%, respectively, indicating consistent fuel demand across both residential and commercial sectors.
Contrasting Trends in Light Fuel Oil
Despite the overall upward trend, light fuel oil sales faced a sharp decline, dropping by 47.8%. This stark contrast emphasises changing preferences and possibly a shift towards more environmentally friendly fuel options.
Consumer Purchases and Month-on-Month Growth
In terms of consumer behaviour, sales from filling stations rose by 6.3%, culminating in 61,537 tonnes for the month. When comparing September figures to those from August 2025, total petroleum sales showed a significant month-on-month increase of 17.3%. This surge was primarily driven by marine gasoil provisions, which increased by 61.7%. Road diesel sales also climbed by 21.1%, while motor gasoline rose by 10.0%. The only exception was aviation kerosene, which saw a decrease of 5.6%.
Stock Levels Reflect Market Dynamics
At the end of September 2025, total stocks of petroleum products recorded a substantial increase of 38.9% compared to the previous month, indicating a response to the heightened sales levels. This increase in stock might suggest preparations for anticipated future demand.
Year-to-Date Performance
Looking at the broader picture, the cumulative sales of petroleum products from January to September 2025 increased by 4.7% compared to the same period in 2024. This sustained growth reflects a resilient petroleum market in Cyprus, with various sectors adapting to changing fuel demands.
