- The Gaza conference in Sharm El Sheikh marked a significant moment, with President Nikos Christodoulides describing it as a day of hope and promise for the region.
In a statement shared on X, the President expressed his privilege in attending the Sharm El Sheikh Summit for Peace in the Middle East. This gathering brought together leaders to discuss pressing issues surrounding Gaza and regional stability.
Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis highlighted Cyprus’ ongoing commitment to humanitarian efforts, noting that the island has provided over 25,000 tonnes of aid to those in need since the president first introduced the Amalthia corridor initiative at a Paris conference two years ago.
“Today, Cyprus is once again present,” Letymbiotis affirmed, as Christodoulides unveiled a six-point initiative aimed at implementing the Gaza agreement. This initiative builds on the fundamental aspects of a peace plan previously proposed by former US President Donald Trump, tailored to leverage Cyprus’ geographical advantages, operational capabilities, and strong relationships with regional states.
During the conference, Cyprus’ approach to security, the rebuilding of Gaza, and humanitarian assistance was presented to fellow leaders. Christodoulides emphasised the importance of Cyprus’ excellent relations with neighbouring countries, positioning it as a pivotal EU member state in the region.
“We presented three fields in which Cyprus can develop specific initiatives,” he explained. Drawing on discussions held in Sharm El Sheikh, the President expressed optimism about the potential for progress. He also informed the President of the European Commission about the initiative prior to the conference.
“It is a proposal that is in the works, it will be formulated, with the sole aim of doing our share to safeguard the implementation of the first phase of the agreement on Gaza,” Christodoulides added, reflecting a commitment to collaborative efforts for peace in the region.
