Students from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa gathered at the institute earlier this month, eager to explore the facilities that will be their home for the coming years. During the event, they embarked on a guided tour, discovering the corridors and laboratories where education, research, and practical applications seamlessly intertwine.
CING highlighted its unique position as an educational hub, where students not only learn but also engage directly with scientific practices that impact patients and society. The chief executive and medical director, Professor Leonidas Phylactou, addressed the incoming students, reflecting on the institute’s journey and its pivotal role in advancing genetics in Cyprus.
Professor Phylactou emphasised the importance of the students’ work, stating, “The findings of your dissertations have the power to influence the course of patients’ health and to contribute to shaping the future of science.” His words underscored the vital role the students would play in the scientific community.
Dean Dr Petros Petrou encouraged the new students to make the most of the educational opportunities available at CING. He highlighted the importance of collaboration with the institute’s highly trained staff and urged students to seek guidance whenever necessary, fostering a supportive learning environment.
The welcome event coincided with the annual reunion of alumni and professors, culminating in a celebratory outing to a traditional Cypriot tavern. This gathering allowed Cypriot students and graduates to introduce their international peers to the rich flavours of Cyprus, further enhancing the sense of community.
CING offers a range of postgraduate programmes at both MSc and PhD levels in fields such as Medical Genetics, Molecular Medicine, Neuroscience, and Biotechnology. The institute prides itself on a pioneering educational model, where students become integral members of research teams, gaining real-world laboratory experience rather than being confined to classrooms.
The institute’s commitment to practical education equips students with relevant skills that align with global job market demands. In addition to hands-on research, students participate in courses and seminars designed to expand their knowledge and professional abilities. Topics range from bioinformatics and biostatistics to scientific writing and bioethics, ensuring a well-rounded education.
CING’s biotechnology programme benefits from collaborations with leading academic institutions and industry sectors, including winemaking, dairy, and baking. These partnerships provide students with invaluable experience and networking opportunities.
The success of CING graduates speaks volumes about the institute’s reputation as a centre of education and research. Many alumni have pursued further studies at prestigious institutions or secured challenging roles in scientific fields, solidifying CING’s impact both locally and internationally.
Postgraduate programmes are open to graduates from various disciplines, including Medicine, Biology, Genetics, Neuroscience, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry, Psychology, and related fields. Teaching is conducted in English, and scholarships are available for both Master’s and Doctoral levels, making these programmes accessible to a diverse student body.
