Organic farming accounts for nearly 70% of farming land in Cyprus, with the latest statistics revealing 7,018 hectares of agricultural land officially classified as organic, according to the Agriculture Ministry.

In total, Cyprus has recorded 10,994 hectares of farmland in 2024. This represents a significant commitment to sustainable agriculture practices on the island. Last year, the number of producers registered under the organic farming certification system reached 1,669, with 1,462 engaged in primary agricultural production.

Livestock and Production Growth

The organic farming landscape also includes 57 registered livestock units, comprising cattle, sheep, goats, poultry, and beekeeping operations. This diverse range of organic production highlights the growing interest in sustainable farming methods among Cypriot farmers.

A Week of Celebration for Organic Farming

The announcement coincides with the European Day of Organic Production, celebrated on September 23. Cyprus has extended this observance into a week-long celebration, running until September 30. This initiative aims to raise public awareness about the European organic logo, which assures product quality and safety while bolstering consumer confidence in organic goods.

Engaging the Younger Generation

Looking ahead to 2025, the Agriculture Department, in collaboration with the Education Ministry, is organising a nationwide school poster competition themed ‘Organic Farming – Nature’s Harmony on Your Plate.’ This initiative aims to engage students and foster an appreciation for organic farming practices among the younger generation.

Upcoming Seminars and Best Practices

In addition to the poster competition, an informative seminar on organic livestock farming is scheduled for October. This event will focus on sharing best practices to enhance sustainability and improve the quality of organic products available on the market.

EU Goals for Organic Production

The European Day of Organic Production, established in 2021 by the European Parliament, European Commission, and Council of the European Union, promotes awareness of organic products and sustainable farming. The initiative aligns with the EU’s ambitious target of having 25% of agricultural land under organic production by 2030, highlighting the region’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
