The 21st Europa Donna Pink Figures March for breast cancer awareness will take place on October 4, emphasising the importance of advocacy and unity in the fight against this pervasive disease. First Lady Philippa Karsera Christodoulides highlighted the significance of this year’s event during a recent announcement.
Commencing at 5pm from the old GSP Stadium, the march will culminate at the AstroBank headquarters. Here, participants will witness the placement of 849 figures, each representing a breast cancer case recorded in Cyprus for this year. This visual impact aims to raise awareness of the current state of breast cancer in the region, showcasing both the prevalence and urgency of the issue.
In addition to the breast cancer figures, there will be nine blue figures symbolising cases of men’s breast cancer, alongside 273 turquoise figures representing gynaecological cancer, and 285 white figures to honour those who have succumbed to the disease in 2024. This poignant display serves to remind the public of the multifaceted nature of cancer and its impact on families and communities.
Stella Mastora of Europa Donna Cyprus shared a powerful message reflecting on the organisation’s journey over the past 25 years. “When Europa Donna Cyprus began its work, breast cancer was still taboo, but through perseverance and collective effort, we have reached the point of speaking openly,” she remarked. Her words encapsulate the transformation in societal attitudes towards the disease, highlighting how advocacy has played a crucial role in fostering dialogue and support.
The march is not merely a symbolic act; it represents the collective voices of those affected by breast cancer—both survivors and the families of those lost. Mastora emphasised the importance of unity, stating, “together we will unite our voices, for those who are struggling and those we have lost, for a future with less fear and more hope.” This sentiment resonates with many, as the event aims to inspire hope and encourage dialogue around prevention, early detection, and treatment.
