weapons cache — The discovery of a weapons cache in Kokkinotrimithia has revealed a criminal network allegedly receiving directions from inmates at Central Prison. This significant find has prompted investigations into various recent criminal incidents across Cyprus, particularly in Larnaca.
Weapons cache: Uncovering a Criminal Web
On Monday, police uncovered the cache, which included four pistols, an air rifle with a scope, and a substantial amount of ammunition. Authorities believe that the discovery has thwarted planned criminal activities by the group, highlighting the severity of their operations.
A Series of Alarming Incidents
Authorities are probing a string of criminal acts believed to be connected to the network. Among these is the attempted murder and arson of four vehicles at a car rental business in Pyla on 14 August, which police now consider solved following the arrest of six suspects, including a convict from Central Prison.
The investigation linked these suspects to several other incidents, including vehicle arson cases in Larnaca and Aradippou. A notable case from late June involved a vehicle belonging to an individual with known ties to law enforcement. A 17-year-old, who was arrested for this crime, also allegedly played a role in the recent attempted murder in Pyla.
Connections to Drug Trafficking
In addition to the firearms, police seized 2.17 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine and 34 grams of cocaine during the operation in Kokkinotrimithia. This suggests that the group was also involved in drug trafficking, further complicating their criminal activities.
Breakthrough in the Investigation
A significant development in the investigation occurred on 22 August when an 18-year-old was apprehended in Paphos. He reportedly stole a vehicle used in the attempted murder case and admitted to selling two stolen cars to one of the suspects for €500. This led investigators to uncover further details about the network’s operations.
As the investigation continues, police are focusing on the connections between the cache and the series of violent crimes, aiming to dismantle the entire network and bring those responsible to justice.
