cyprus envoy — cyprus envoy — The focus on the Cyprus problem is set to intensify as the EU announces a new envoy. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed her optimism regarding the resolution of longstanding issues on the divided island, citing renewed momentum in talks.
On Sunday, von der Leyen revealed via social media that she had a productive conversation with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. Following this call, she noted, “We can see renewed momentum for the settlement of the Cyprus issue under the auspices of the United Nations and in line with the principles, values and legislation of the European Union.”
Von der Leyen emphasised the importance of seizing this opportunity for progress, indicating that the EU is prepared to lend its full support. “The European Commission stands ready to support the process with all the necessary assistance and the tools at its disposal,” she stated, highlighting the EU’s commitment to facilitating reunification efforts.
To bolster these efforts, von der Leyen announced that a special representative for Cyprus would be appointed on Monday, a role that has been vacant since March 23, when former Commissioner Johannes Hahn resigned to become chairman of the General Council of the Austrian National Bank. Hahn had been appointed to this position in May 2025 as part of a broader strategy to enhance the EU’s involvement in the reunification discussions.
As anticipation builds for the announcement of Hahn’s successor, details regarding the appointment process remain unclear. The announcement is expected on Monday, although no meeting of the College of Commissioners has been scheduled prior to this date.
This development comes just before an enlarged meeting on Cyprus, which is due to take place in New York this week under UN auspices. The discussions will likely address the ongoing challenges and potential pathways toward resolving the division of the island.
