This marks the seventh consecutive year for Sommerkino, which this year embraces the theme of water. With lounge chairs set up in a picturesque garden and the iconic Ledra Palace Hotel as a backdrop, each screening promises to take audiences on a unique cinematic journey.

Open-air cinema: Captivating Film Line-Up

The festival kicks off with 22 Lengths, directed by Mia Maariel Meyer. Based on Caroline Wahl’s debut novel, the film tells the poignant story of two sisters navigating life’s challenges while cherishing their bond.

The following night, on July 7, the spotlight shifts to Skin Deep by Alex Schaad. This film follows a troubled young couple, portrayed by award-winning actors Mala Emde and Jonas Dassler, as they escape to a remote island, where they can reinvent themselves and confront their issues.

Exploring Themes of Friendship and Resilience

On July 8, audiences will be treated to Beyond the Blue Border, a literary adaptation of Dorit Linke’s novel. Sarah Neumann’s film poignantly depicts the harrowing journey of Hanna and Andreas as they swim 50km across the Baltic Sea, highlighting the complexities of friendship during a time of division in East and West Germany.

The series continues on July 9 with Alaska by Max Gleschinski. This introspective film features Kerstin, who paddles aimlessly across the Mecklenburg Lake District. Her solitary journey is disrupted when she encounters Alima, who challenges her to engage with her own feelings and thoughts.

Concluding with a Thought-Provoking Narrative

The festival wraps up on July 10 with Afire, directed by the acclaimed Christian Petzold. Set in a holiday home by the Baltic Sea, this film explores themes of self-discovery and interpersonal understanding against the backdrop of the climate crisis, as four young people navigate their relationships and the world around them.

Sommerkino: Between Waves promises an engaging selection of films that not only entertain but also provoke thought and reflection. All screenings will begin at 8pm and admission is free, with films presented in their original German language, accompanied by English subtitles.
