cyprus envoy — cyprus envoy — The EU is poised to announce a new envoy for the Cyprus problem, according to President Nikos Christodoulides. This development comes as leaders gather for a two-day summit in Brussels, with discussions ongoing about the future of peace talks on the island.
- Efforts to settle the Cyprus dispute have seen a stagnation since direct negotiations faltered in the summer of 2017, highlighting the urgency of establishing effective leadership in this area.
While addressing journalists upon his arrival at the summit, Christodoulides confirmed that the announcement would be made soon. He stated, “We shall have a new appointment on the part of the European Union.” The President noted that discussions regarding potential candidates have already taken place.
“Today we discussed some names, subsequent to previous discussions, and very soon the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, having gone through the necessary internal deliberations, will make a public announcement,” he added.
This vacancy became apparent following the resignation of former European Commissioner Johannes Hahn in March 2026, leaving a crucial role unfilled at a time when the EU is actively involved in the search for a resolution to the Cyprus issue.
Christodoulides emphasised the importance of the EU’s involvement, stating that it holds “the most decisive role” in the current push to revive Cyprus peace negotiations. The appointment of a new envoy is seen as a vital step in facilitating communication between the EU and the United Nations to resume talks aimed at reunifying the island.
