sex trafficking — A major sex trafficking operation has led to the conviction of four individuals, with the Limassol Criminal Court sentencing them to prison terms of up to five years. This case highlights the alarming scale of a trafficking network, reportedly consisting of around 200 members, operating across both the government-controlled areas and the occupied north of Cyprus.
On Wednesday, the court handed down sentences to two women, aged 33 and 32, and two men, aged 28 and 47, all of whom pleaded guilty to multiple charges related to sexual exploitation and trafficking. The women received the heaviest penalties, each sentenced to five years for their roles in exploiting an adult, while the men faced lighter sentences of 18 months and nine months, respectively.
The women admitted to various offences, including sexual exploitation, money laundering, and running a brothel. The 33-year-old defendant further acknowledged withholding personal documents from a victim, while the 32-year-old pleaded guilty to theft and common assault.
In its ruling, the court underscored the organised nature of the trafficking network, emphasising that the existence of around 200 members operating across borders was a significant aggravating factor. The court noted that the defendants demonstrated clear evidence of planning and coordination as part of a larger criminal enterprise.
Evidence presented during the trial revealed the manipulative tactics used by the accused to control their victim. The 33-year-old was found to have contacted the victim prior to her arrival in Cyprus, arranging her passport and flight. Upon her arrival, the defendant confiscated the victim’s passport to prevent her from leaving and subsequently arranged for her to be advertised for sexual services online.
This exploitation continued as the defendant collected payments and dictated the victim’s share of earnings. Threats were made to ensure compliance, including intimidation of the victim regarding her family abroad. Similarly, the 32-year-old defendant acted as a supervisor for the victim, further exploiting her vulnerable position by posting advertisements online and physically assaulting her.
The court acknowledged that neither woman was the mastermind behind the operation, yet their involvement was deemed substantial. The longer duration of the 33-year-old’s control over the victim’s documents contributed to the severity of her sentence. However, her cooperation with police, providing crucial information that led to the identification of the other defendants, was considered a mitigating factor.
The 28-year-old played a more limited role, assisting in creating and posting advertisements for the victim’s services, while the 47-year-old acted as a driver, facilitating the victim’s transport to locations where she was exploited. Both men received sentences reflecting their lesser involvement in the operation.
In determining the sentences, the court also took into account the personal circumstances of the defendants, their guilty pleas, and their previously clean criminal records. This case serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive issue of human trafficking and the need for continued vigilance and enforcement to combat such crimes.
